Customer case – enhanced drilling efficiency with cleaner mud
During drilling operations on the Troll Field, the Jagtech Dual MAPS System was deployed to remove magnetic metallic debris from drilling fluids.
The customer observed major improvements in drilling performance and measurement reliability, leading to one of the highest recorded drilling rates for long horizontal sections on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
Performance results were later presented in SPE-215604-MS and SPE-216151-MS.
Technology applied
Jagtech Dual MAPS System (Metallic Active Particle Separator)
A flow-positioned magnetic separation system designed to:
- Cover 100 % of the flow cross-section with a defined magnet grid
- Use titanium rods with stacked neodymium magnets for high field strength
- Include an integrated scraper and semi-automatic cleaning system for efficient, safe handling
Customer results
Feedback from the Troll Field campaign included:
- More than 10 × higher efficiency in metallic-particle removal than previous magnet systems
- Average recovery of approximately 500 kg of metal per well
- Elimination of MWD turbine/motor clogging and related downtime
- Reduced full tripping out of hole, resulting in measurable cost and emissions savings
- Contributed to drilling a 6624 m horizontal 8½″ section in one run with an average ROP of 43.1 m/h, ranked among the top five long-section drilling performances in Norway at the time
Operational insight
By efficiently removing metallic contamination, the Dual MAPS System supported stable directional control, improved measurement accuracy, and increased downhole-tool reliability – key factors in the project’s overall drilling success.
